Sports Tech

I found a new (to me) gadget-news site recently. If, like me, you love to check out all the latest and tiniest little doodads, hit up the site once in a while.

They just posted a little article about some of the technology that the riders in the Tour de France get to ride around with, namely some new Oakley sunglasses that Lance was spotted riding in recently. Oakley is releasing these sunglasses (called the “Thump” apparently) that have an mp3 player built in to them. Kind of nifty, but limited in actual usability. Other companies have been a bit more forward-thinking in the design – a $500 pair of sunglasses with an mp3 player that’ll probably be obsolete in a year? Not my cup of tea! Most ski/snowboard helmet have soft ear covers, and mine (the Giro 9.Nine) has a decent set of open-air headphones built in to the ear covers. I’ve plugged my Clie into them a few times for some tunes while skiing, and can’t wait to plug in the mini and really jam out (the Clie only held about an hour’s worth of music). Burton also makes a jacket that has iPod controls hardwired into the fabric on the sleeve; I expect that sort of thing to show up a lot in the next couple of years. Yay technology!
