Work Work

2004年3月26日22時00分

Yikes, the last two weekends I have had only one day off (with seven days of work in between). And this weekend I have only one day off. I thought I was working both days, giving me 12 days straight of work time, but I am pretty sure I didn’t do a swap with someone for next tuesday. Phew!

PS. The title is to be read in the voice of a Warcraft Peon.

51% Geek

2004年3月26日5時02分

Thanks to Sean.

You are 51% geek
You are a geek. Good for you! Considering the endless complexity of the universe, as well as whatever discipline you happen to be most interested in, you’ll never be bored as long as you have a good book store, a net connection, and thousands of dollars worth of expensive equipment. Assuming you’re a technical geek, you’ll be able to afford it, too. If you’re not a technical geek, you’re geek enough to mate with a technical geek and thereby get the needed dough. Dating tip: Don’t date a geek of the same persuasion as you. You’ll constantly try to out-geek the other.

Baseball in Japan

2004年3月24日14時32分

Baseball here feels a lot like college football. I am watching what as best I can tell is a high school or college game. Big Band music (like John Philip Sousa) blares in the stands and the crowd is lead to . But at the end of the game an air raid siren is rung (in case someone wasn’t sure the game was over), so I guess there are some differences. That an the entire infield is made from this hideous black dirt. Where is the grass?

Is that the anthem playing now? No! It is the winning high school’s song. Cool! The losing side is bowing and everyone on the other side knows the song.

Interesting Fact: Peking Duck Burger

A student told me today that McDonald’s serves a duck burger in China.

Interesting Anecdote: Love at First Sight

2004年3月22日12時44分

I have had a difficult time explaining that term. I get the feeling that a woman isn’t suppost to say that she didn’t like the person she married when she first met him or something.

At any rate, a student told me a cute story about how she imagined and hoped she would fall in love as a kid. She is standing at the crosswalk, waiting for the signal to change. When it does she starts walking. On the way she meets the eyes of someone crossing from the other direction and they immediately fall in love and live happily ever after.

So very charming! Is this most Japanese people’s vision of love at first sight? Too bad it didn’t happen that way for her though.

Interesting Fact: Japanese Courts

2004年3月22日12時39分

Yesterday a student, Miyoko, informed me that in Japan, people are hardly ever tried by jury. The trial merely consists of the defense, prosecution and a judge! I was certainly surprised. I would be worried about corruption in a Japanese court.

I also remember reading that Japan’s confession rate is astronomical (above 90% or something). But that could be wrong. If it is true, are these two facts related?

FYI, which hemisphere you are in has no effect on the way your toilet flushes. Too bad!

Health Care Costs

2004年3月20日3時35分

Slate:

Americans might be amused that some Germans are outraged because they now pay $12.40 each time they visit the doctor.

Very true. I went to a doctor when I was sick with strep. I had no insurance (well I did but I didn’t understand the vocab hokkensho and she brushed away my insurance card when I presented it) but the visit cost me about $50 or 5000yen. That even included the cost of the medicine!
