Judge Hamdi Dredd

2004年6月30日13時47分

Slate says while talking about the Hamdi case

One operational implication from this ruling is that soldiers in the field will need to become substantially more diligent about their actions at the “point of capture” than they have been. When military personnel capture someone now, they are supposed to fill out a short form with tiny boxes for “date and time of capture” and “description of weapons, special equipment, documents.” Additionally, prisoners are generally interrogated when captured, in the hopes that they will provide valuable battlefield intelligence. It’s not clear whether these measures will create enough of an evidentiary record to satisfy the kind of process envisioned by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor in the Hamdi decision. If they don’t, the military will need to develop some new mechanism for gathering evidence, such as the creation of special Judge Advocate General teams whose sole job is to interview soldiers after they capture detainees, in order to create an evidentiary record for future detention hearings.

Dunno about you, but makes me envision Judge Dredd–judges and lawyers on the battlefield interrogating people.

The Anti-Anna Anna Kournakova

2004年6月30日4時24分

Maria SharapovaToday I was watching TV while taking a bath and turned on some tennis. Ai Sugiyama, who is really popular here, was playing some tall, blonde Russian chick, Maria Sharapova. It was funny. The first shot of Sharapova was of her pulling something out of a bag and they had subtly angled the camera to give maxim exposure down her shirt. It was the first time I had seen or heard of her. I immediately drew references to Anna Kournakova. Apparently I’m not the only one. This times article says that Maria Sharapova is trying to fight off the comparisons to Anna. I think she’ll need to try harder.

Coalition of the Wild-Eyed?

Well this is a different sort of ad. Kind of clever and is effective for me. But I doubt this is the sort of ad anyone will be proud of down the line.

Mario Kart Double Dash

Were you all as disappointed in the battle modes as I was? All in all I’m highly disappointed. The levels blow.

Your Personality is Junk

Diana informed me of an interesting study that says your personality can be revealed by your junk food choices. I am probably a cheese curl or tortilla chip, how about you?

Moore is not educational

“This is a film I’m going to watch to help explain to my children our President’s decision to start an unnecessary and unjustified war.” That is exactly the wrong way to view that piece of demogaugary. Calling it “a triffle partisan” is a joke. It is like calling Ann Coulter “a triffle partisan.” They are both attack dogs for their respective sides, and any arguement they may make to contrary to their party is done purely to advance their one-sided argument by making it seem more balanced than it really is. Tell your children to read this as soon as you’ve made them watch Moore’s movie, Sean.

Gmail

2004年6月26日5時30分

Ryan sent me a gmail invite today! The system seems pretty nice. No advertisments (as the brits would say) in the message body. Anyway, my firstname at lastname dot com works still and is preferred, but firstnamelastname at gmail dot com also now works.

Japan’s Parallel Society

2004年6月26日5時25分

Japan and America have very different societies. The stereotypical differences are things like being quiet/loud, reserved/open, crowded/open, etc. However, on my way back from the vending machine I had an epiphany about a less talked about difference between our cultures and how that can apply to computer design.
